DESCRIPTION:ADPAN is conducting a series of training on the death penalty in Malaysia. The third on our series will be on “Clemency and Pardon Petitions in Malaysia” \nSpeakers & Facilitators \nAbdul Rashid Ismail has been practising law in Malaysia for over 20 years and he is a partner at Messrs. Rashid Zulkifli.  Rashid is the Past President of the National Human Rights Society of Malaysia (HAKAM). Rashid has been working on issues involving death penalty in Malaysia. \nUthman Abdul Ghani is a legal associate at Messrs. Rashid Zulkifli and his areas of practice include civil and criminal litigation. He has a keen interest in the research and study of constitutional issues and the abolition of death penalty. \nNadiah Humairah Sudirman is a pupil-in-chambers at Messrs. Rashid Zulkifli and she has been exposed to civil and criminal litigation. As a student at the University of Malaya\, she led a project involving refugees at the varsity Legal Aid Clinic. Nadiah is now pursuing her passion in human rights with the National Human Rights Society of Malaysia (“HAKAM”) as a HAKAM Youth convenor. She regularly writes on human rights issues in Malaysia. \nThe training session will cover the issue of: \n\nOverview of the death penalty in Malaysia\nThe legal framework on clemency in Malaysia\nPractice session on drafting pardon petitions\n\nThe training will be held online via Zoom on 31 July 2021\, 11.00AM to 1.00PM (+8GMT). The second on our series will be on “Amicus Curiae and Handling Death Penalty Cases in Malaysia” \nSpeaker: \nKhaizan Sharizad binti Ab. Razak (Sherrie) \nKhaizan Sharizad (Sherrie) is a practicing lawyer in Kuala Lumpur\, Malaysia. She is a Partner at Messrs. Seira & Sharizad in Kuala Lumpur. Her practice is mainly on Corporate and Commercial Litigation\, Administrative Law as well as Criminal Law. \nSherrie was formerly the Kuala Lumpur Bar Representative to the Bar Council and Chairperson of the Bar Council National Young Lawyers & Pupils Committee. \nSherrie is also a filmmaker\, a member of the Freedom Film Network Malaysia with a special interest in highlighting human rights and public interest issues in her documentaries. She is the winner of the Freedom Film Festival Malaysia Award (2009) organised by Pusat KOMAS\, as co-director together with Seira Sacha Abu Bakar of the documentary film titled “No Silver Lining: The Perak Crisis” (2009) and co-directed three other documentary films\, “Death in Dilemma: The Final Curtain” (2011)\,  “Ombak Perubahan: Pergerakan Sosial Di Malaysia” (2012) and “Menunggu Masa”(2018). \n  \nSuzana Norlihan Binti Alias \nSuzana Norlihan Alias is a criminal defence lawyer with practice experiences of more than 20 years and a member of the Human Rights Committee of the Malaysian Bar Council. \nSuzana advocates on a wide range of criminal matters and has in the past\, advocated on the case of torture and abuse in detention and commonly undertake probono litigations. Apart from her contribution as a lawyer\, Suzana is also a distinguished speaker on issues relating to the death penalty and criminal law was invited to speak at the World Congress against the Death Penalty and Meeting of International Justice Ministers. \nThe training will be held online via Zoom on 26 June\, 11.00AM to 1.00PM (+8GMT). DESCRIPTION:Asia accounts for 60 percent of the world’s population and more than 90 percent of the world’s executions. Her research focuses on digital politics in Southeast Asia\, especially issues of online political participation\, hate speech\, misinformation\, and foreign interference. Her current projects funded by Facebook and Australia’s Department of Defence examine issues of hate speech detection\, effectiveness of counter misinformation strategies\, and mapping networks of foreign interference on YouTube and Facebook. She is the author of Opposing Democracy in the Digital Age (University of Michigan Press\, 2020) and Digital Media and Disinformation in Southeast Asia\, with Ross Tapsell (forthcoming\, ISEAS Press).
